Eco Leaders

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF AN ECO- LEADER?
Eco-leaders are an essential part of our leadership team at Whiston Worrygoose. They are introduced early to the real-world issue of ‘sustainability’ taught in our curriculum, with a more hands-on approach. These leaders are integral to promoting eco-friendly habits across our school. We encourage the team to take pride in their school grounds, teaching how and why we can promote sustainable habitats and maintaining a clean and healthy outdoor space. In turn, eco-leaders also build on their understanding of sustainability in the wider world, building respect for nature beyond their school lives.

HOW CAN I BECOME AN ECO- LEADER?
Each class will select an eco-leader at the start of each academic year. Eco-leaders are chosen by writing a letter of application and teachers will also consider how the child
has proved to have a solid interest in all things nature and ‘being green’.

WHAT DOES THE ROLE OF AN ECO- LEADER LOOK LIKE DAY TO DAY?
Eco-leaders take part in a range of exciting activities. During one selected lunchtime per week, the eco-leaders meet with members of staff. Throughout these meeting they discuss how we can make our school more eco-friendly and also carry out practical activities such as mapping the school’s current habitats, carrying out data collection and surveying pupils. Eco- leaders have a say in which areas of our school are invested in, how we can spend a ‘green-budget’ and they may even get to present their ideas to senior leadership and school governors!

This year, the eco-leaders have been lucky enough to take part in sustainability conferences, put on by White Woods Academy Trust. They have also been involved
in the RHS Nature Park project for schools and we expect to see some exciting developments ahead. By becoming an eco-leader, pupils can truly make a difference
to the sustainability of our school and can make a significant impact on our school grounds in years to come.
