GEOGRAPHY
Please At Whiston Worrygoose our learners are encouraged to be enquisitive, to pose questions and seek answers. Our geogrpahy curriculum inspires children to look closely at the world around them and develop the skills necessary to be able to interpret what they see.
We want geography to be creative, fun, and above all relevant and meaningful to the children's own lives and experiences. As such, we seek to build upon the child's 'personal geography' by developing locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography skills and fieldwork, which starts with them and their immediate locality before branching out and examining the national and international world. We seek to broaden children's real-life experiences both inside and outside of school through educational visits and field study, visitors, exploration and discovery.

INTENT
Geography is sometimes used as a blocked focus for the term (as is History) but we also aim to ensure that it is integrated into other areas of the curriculum and the basic skills are taught throughout the year through cross curricular work.
We use the National curriculum to identify the key knowledge and skills required to be successful in geography. Teaching should encourage curiosity and ensure pupils have a good knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments.
IMPLEMENTATION
Geography at Whiston is taught in blocks throughout the year, so that children can achieve depth in their learning. At the beginning of each unit, children are able to convey what they know as we retrieve prior learning in depth to ensure that children embed their geographical knowledge. In every unit of learning in geography, teachers focus on the real-world applications of the geographical learning children are engaged with. We are extremely lucky at Whiston Worrygoose to have such wonderful grounds and amazing places to visit locally so we often take the opportunity to move our learning outside.
All of our Curriculum Unit Plans have been carefully planned to ensure children are receiving high-quality lessons with meaningful learning opportunities which will stay with the children throughout their lives.
IMPACT
By the end of their primary education at Whiston Worrygoose, our learners will have gained a rich body of geographical knowledge and a wide range of transferable skills, which they can apply to other subjects and contexts.
We aspire for children to leave our school being able to debate and discuss geographical issues and to be able to reflect and form their own opinions on matters such as climate change and natural disasters. We measure our impact based on pupils’ confidence to ask and explore questions to further their own geographical knowledge and understanding. They will be inquisitive young learners and citizens who choose to understand global environmental issues and seek to make a personal difference in protecting and shaping the world we share.
