At Whiston Worrygoose our learners are encouraged to express themselves, be composers and confident performers. Our music curriculum inspires children to be able to communicate their thoughts and develop their ideas through, improvising, composing and performing.
We believe a high-quality music education is essential for pupils to engage and inspire them to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to music from a variety of genres. Music has deep links with inference skills and promotes positive speaking and listening. Performing also ensures that pupils become musically literate at a level suitable for a future in performance and as active participants in the musical world.

First Order Concepts
INTENT
Music is taught weekly but we also aim to ensure that it is integrated into our school culture with many opportunities throughout the calendar year for children to perform to a variety of audiences and in a variety of contexts. We use the National Curriculum, we aim to ensure that every child is given a chance to play and perform with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression. As children progress through school there are opportunities to compose music for a range of purposes. Listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory. Use and understand a wealth of musical vocabulary and other musical notations. Appreciate and understand a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music drawn from different traditions and from great composers and musicians. As well as, developing an understanding of the history of music.
IMPLEMENTATION
Music at Whiston is taught in blocks throughout the year, so that children can achieve depth in their learning. At the beginning of each unit, children are able to convey what they know as we retrieve prior learning in depth to ensure that children embed their musical knowledge. Throughout each year children will get chance to listen and appraise, improvise, compose, perform with instruments and sing.
We are extremely lucky at Whiston Worrygoose to have an amazing performance space in our school hall which is equipped with speakers, digital presentation equipment and mood lighting where our pupils feel confident to perform.
All of our Curriculum Unit Plans have been carefully planned to ensure children are receiving high-quality lessons with meaningful end points which will stay with the children throughout their lives.
Performance opportunities throughout the year are specifically planned for and offer pupils a chance to perform solo and as an ensemble in a variety of context both in and out of school.
IMPACT
Outcomes in Music and floor books evidence a broad and balanced music curriculum and demonstrate children’s acquisition of identified key knowledge. As children progress throughout our school, they develop a deep knowledge, understanding and appreciation of music, musical history and its place within a wide range of diverse cultures. Regular opportunities to compose and perform in a variety of contexts provide relevant and memorable experiences.
By the end of their primary education at Whiston Worrygoose, our learners will have gained a rich body of musical knowledge and a wide range of transferable skills, which they can apply to other subjects and contexts. We assess on a regular basis, at the end of each block, in order to build a rounded picture of each child as a musician.
We aspire for children to leave our school being able to listen, appraise, discuss, perform and compose with increasing accuracy and confidence.
We measure our impact based on pupils’ confidence to perform, express and compose with instruments and vocally. As well as their confidence to explore and expand their musical knowledge and understanding.
